SERVICES

Peninsula Engineering Company has provided structural and civil engineering services for over twenty-five years. Projects vary and will typically involve the creation of structural building plans for new commercial and residential buildings, as well as the structural design for building repair and building improvement. Wood, masonry, concrete and steel are utilized construction materials. Included as part our structural design is the associated 2007 California Building Code calculations. We also provide design for non-building structures, such as retaining walls, light standards, roof structures, signs and drainage facilities (Hydrology and open channel hydraulic calculations are associated with the design of drainage facilities).

Structural Inspections and Forensic Reports

Peninsula Engineering works to find solutions to distressed structures and identifying the cause, which we can present in the form of a written report. Whether you are purchasing an existing building with a perceived problem or an owner of damaged or distressed structure, we can offer practical ideas for repair or maintenance. We bring years of experience following the observation of building damaged from an earthquake, flood, earth movement, vehicle impact and deferred maintenance.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls from smaller, three foot high conventional walls to larger, twenty foot high concrete caisson and pile type walls are not uncommon in hillside communities. We design all types of retaining walls and can incorporate the wall design with the addition of a deck or other landscaping to produce the maximum benefit and improvement of a property. We not only generate the structural design of the wall but can also provide a plan indicating lot topography, drainage and required grading. A carefully detailed plan ultimately allows for a better overall project.

Custom Homes and Residential Remodels

Quality custom homes are produced when the builder follows quality construction documents. Detailed plans provide for higher quality homes and allow for more accurateconstruction bidding and less misunderstandings during construction. Inexpensive design engineering often translates into a plan containing less detail with associated problems during construction.

Structural Design of Buildings

Peninsula Engineering is familiar with structural design on new and existing buildings utilizing timber, steel, reinforced masonry and reinforced concrete. Structural design typically entails structural analysis for both vertical gravity loads and lateral forces that are generated from wind and seismic events (earthquake).

Structural Design of Non-building Structures

Outdoor fireplaces, landscaping features, such as water walls, arbors, and shade roof structures, are examples on non-building structures that require building-code structural analysis. These types of structures have become increasingly popular in Southern California as part of outdoor landscaping plans. We have also designed non-building commercial structures, including heavy commercial storage racks, footbridges and cantilevered steel trusses for the support of industrial piping.

Drainage and Grading

Peninsula Engineering Company has over 25 years experience in providing residential drainage repair and improvement plans. Uncontrolled drainage near house foundations can be associated with foundation damage, site erosion and interior flooding. Water collecting in crawl spaces below floors may cause interior musty odors and movement in interior foundations. During periods of heavy rainfall, many homes hillside communities suffer consequences of unmaintained, uncontrolled drainage. Over time the value of a home may be reduced from poor drainage. Construction to improve drainage should be made under the direction of a plan created by a Registered Civil Engineer. Plans allow for competitive bidding from qualified contractors. In absence of construction plans, determining the correct construction cost is not likely.
